INCA was at FTTH Europe from 13 to 15 April at ExCeL London, where the conference brought together the fibre broadband industry from across Europe to discuss the future of fixed network infrastructure.

Securing the Future of Fixed Networks

INCA’s CEO Paddy Paddison joined forces with TechUK to host a joint panel session on securing the future of fixed networks. The discussion examined how the Telecommunications Security Act (TSA) and NIS2 directive are being implemented across the UK and Europe, and looked ahead to forthcoming legislation including the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill.

The panel brought together perspectives from across the industry, with contributions from Dan Tor of Sky, Tracey Sheehan from PRism Business Consulting, Manuel Garnelo from ASTEO Red Neutra and Peter Seymour from Cenerva. Together they explored the practical challenges operators face in meeting new security requirements, the differences in approach between UK and European regulatory frameworks, and how the industry can prepare for the next wave of cybersecurity regulation.

Key Themes

The conversation highlighted several important themes for the Altnet sector. The TSA is now setting the baseline for telecoms security in the UK, while NIS2 is doing the same across the EU. For independent operators who may lack the in-house security teams of the larger providers, understanding and implementing these requirements is a significant undertaking. The panel discussed practical steps that smaller operators can take, and emphasised the value of industry collaboration in sharing knowledge and best practice.

Looking ahead, the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill will build on the TSA framework, and the panel agreed that early engagement with the legislative process is essential for ensuring that the needs of independent operators are properly considered.

INCA at European Events

INCA’s presence at FTTH Europe reflects the growing importance of international collaboration in telecoms policy and security. As regulatory frameworks increasingly align across borders, it is vital that UK independent operators are part of the European conversation. INCA will continue to represent the Altnet sector at major industry events throughout the year.

INCA also met with members of ELFA (European Local Fibre Association and had a dinner at the Union Jack Club with members from Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Romania, Spain and Netherlands.
